Most patients require O
2 supplementation. The target level for pO
2 is about 60mmHg. Higher levels offer little advantage and increase the risk of hypercapnia. Patients whose condition deteriorates with O
2 therapy (e.g, those with severe acidemia or CNS depression) require ventilatory assistance.
